How do your customers make a choice from one of your products? Do you have a website that showcases all your items in static photographic form, or does your website allow them to create scenarios to help their choice?

Image compositing is a really cool way of setting up scenes and choices to enable your customers to get a better feel for what they’re buying. Compositing is a way of rendering digital images so that they have a real depthto them: think 3D rather than normal 2D flat images.

We have recently been working with a company who makes picture frames, to build them a website chock full of image compositing. This multi-layering light source-simulating technique means we can build images of pictures frames to look like they are bevelled or ridged or any shape at all. Customers can upload a picture of the print they want framing and then choose the mount and frame from hundreds of possibilities. This enables them to try out loads of options and choose (and order!) the one that fits their pictures the best, but without the need for any funny 3D glasses.

Building a website like this involves writing reams and reams of code in order to simulate light sources and product design. It’s a challenge we relish as there is significant complexity to the project, but it’s something that is going to make a huge difference to the end customers’ buying experience.
