What does your website look like? You may have spent hours and hours proofing it on your computer, but have you tried viewing it on your iPhone? What does it look like?
In the UK, there are now more mobile devices than people, and so not considering how your site looks on a smart phone is pure craziness. It’d be like having a shop and saying you only took cash. Even John Lewis realised they needed to move with the times and start accepting credit cards as, much as they hated to admit it, not everyone was or would ever be a JL store card customer.
Having a mobile specific website could be a good idea, but it can also be incredibly complicated to design and build, meaning you may well rack up thousands of pounds in costs. And unless you have that to chuck around, there is an alternative that will actually work much better.
Having a website that is designed to scale and fit into any size or shape of screen is the ideal scenario. You are not limiting your viewing audience and therefore not losing potential customers.
This type of design is called ‘responsive’. What this basically means is that the website will automatically fit into any screen size. Look at it on an iPhone and it will be clear and easy to navigate as if you were viewing it on your PC. Think of it like adding water to different vessels. The water always moves to fit.
Although the set up is a bit more hassle upfront (for your web people!), your website will be prepared for pretty much any new mobile devices that land on the market. Unless one with a circular screen turned up. That might scupper things a bit.
Our advice is to think about this before you launch into having a new website designed. It will save you time, effort and most importantly money in the long run.
We are happy to work with you and your web designers to help deliver responsive and engaging websites, and the earlier we are involved the better the end product will be. If you would like to talk through how responsive design could benefit your business, just give us a call on 01858 414217.
