I can’t remember the moment when I decided to become a coder. It was certainly long before the first Dotcom bubble was blown, before email and the web changed everything, years before the film “Hackers” made it seem cool to code!
My first experience of coding was copying 100s of lines of code from books into my then state of the art Commodore VIC 20. Most of the time these were riddled with errors and many hours were spent working out how they should have been written.
But since those early days my interest in what can be created with code and how it can be used to enhance our everyday lives has continued to grow. Software now powers our daily lives in ways that I could never have imagined back then. In our connected world, software is how we interface with everything from our phones to our cars. In the 35 years since those early days I have learnt and used many different coding languages from Basic, through Pascal to C# and while the languages change, the challenges remain much the same. Being a great coder is about understanding a requirement and being able to deliver a solution to it.
The desire to create great software solutions eventually led to me starting Code String almost four and a half years ago now. While this has meant stepping away from coding to manage the business, I still try and keep my hand in. I’m very excited and proud of being able to give a new generation of coders an opportunity at Code String. I’ve taken on four apprentices since we started, with two having already completed their training and now being valued members of our team. University graduates too make up our team alongside more experienced developers.
We continue to try and employee and nurture talent with initiatives in schools and encouraging more girls to think about coding (including my daughters). We still need more young people to take to the keyboard and should do all we can to dispel the idea of coders as geeks or nerds!
